About Jamaica
Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, 234 kilometers (146 mi) in length and as much as 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width situated in the Caribbean Sea. It is about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 190 km (120 mi) west of the island of Hispaniola, on which Haiti and the Dominican Republic are situated. Formerly a Spanish possession known as Santiago, it later became the British West Indies Crown colony of Jamaica. It is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. In terms of size, Jamaica has a total area of 10,991 sq km which is slightly smaller than Connecticut. It has 10,831 sq km land area and 160 sq km water area. The island - discovered by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1494 - was settled by the Spanish early in the 16th century. The native Taino Indians, who had inhabited Jamaica for centuries, were gradually exterminated and replaced by African slaves. Jamaica gradually obtained increasing independence from Britain, and in 1958 it joined other British Caribbean colonies in forming the Federation of the West Indies. The population of Jamaica is approximately 2,804,332. The population density of it is 252/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.779%. Most of Jamaica's people belong to Protestant religion. Official and most common language of those people are English and English patois. It has 91.2% of black and rest are mixed and other people. The Jamaican economy is heavily dependent on services, which now account for more than 60% of GDP. The country continues to derive most of its foreign exchange from tourism, remittances, and bauxite/alumina. Remittances account for nearly 20% of GDP and are equivalent to tourism revenues. Jamaica's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $11.69 billion with GDP of $3,658 per capita.
