About the Ivory Coast
Cote d'Ivoire, or Ivory Coast, officially the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire is a country in West Africa. The government officially discourages the use of the name Ivory Coast in English, preferring the French name Cote d'Ivoire to be used in all languages. It borders Liberia and Guinea to the west, Mali and Burkina Faso to the north, Ghana to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. In terms of size, Ivory Coast has a total area of 322,460 sq km which is slightly larger than New Mexico. It has 318,000 sq km land area and 4,460 sq km water area. Close ties to France since independence in 1960, the development of cocoa production for export, and foreign investment made Cote d'Ivoire one of the most prosperous of the West African states, but did not protect it from political turmoil. In December 1999, a military coup - the first ever in Cote d'Ivoire's history - overthrew the government. The population of Ivory Coast is approximately 18,373,060. The population density of it is 56/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.96%. Most of Ivory Coast 's people belong to Muslim religion. Official and most common language of those people is French. It has 42% of Akan and rest are Voltaiques, Northern Mendes, Krous and Southern Mendes people. Cote d'Ivoire is the world's largest producer and exporter of cocoa beans and a significant producer and exporter of coffee and palm oil. Consequently, the economy is highly sensitive to fluctuations in international prices for these products, and, to a lesser extent, in climatic conditions. Ivory Coast's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $32.86 billion with GDP of $1,800 per capita.
