About Indonesia
The Republic of Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia. Comprising 17,508 islands, it is the world's largest archipelagic state. With a population of 222 million people in 2006, it is the world's fourth most populous country and the most populous Muslim-majority nation, although officially it is not an Islamic state. In terms of size, Indonesia has a total area of 1,919,440 sq km which is slightly less than three times the size of Texas. It has 1,826,440 sq km land area and 93,000 sq km water area. The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan's surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to relinquish its colony. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic state and home to the world's largest Muslim population. The population of Indonesia is approximately 237,512,355. The population density of it is 134/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.175%. Most of Indonesia's people belong to Muslim religion. Official and most common language of those people is Indonesian. It has 40% of Javanese people and rest are Sudanese, Madurese, Minangkabau, Betawi, Bugis, Banten and Banjar people. Indonesia, a vast polyglot nation, has been undergoing significant economic reforms under President Yudhoyono. Indonesia's debt-to-GDP ratio has been declining steadily, its foreign exchange reserves are at an all-time high of over $50 billion, and its stock market has been one of the three best performers in the world in 2006 and 2007, as global investors sought out higher returns in emerging markets. Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $837.8 billion with GDP of $3,725 per capita.
