About Iceland

Iceland, officially the Republic of Iceland is a country in northern Europe, comprising the island of Iceland and its outlying islets in the North Atlantic Ocean between the rest of Europe and Greenland. It has a population growth rate of 0.783%. Most of Iceland's people belong to Lutheran Church of Iceland religion. Official and most common language of those people is Icelandic. It has 94% of homogeneous mixture of descendants of Norse and Celts and 6% of foreign origin people. Iceland's Scandinavian-type economy is basically capitalistic, yet with an extensive welfare system (including generous housing subsidies), low unemployment, and remarkably even distribution of income. In the absence of other natural resources (except for abundant geothermal power), the economy depends heavily on the fishing industry, which provides 70% of export earnings and employs 6% of the work force. Iceland's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $12.172 billion with GDP of $40,277 per capita.
