About Honduras
Honduras is a democratic republic in Central America. It was formerly known as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). The country is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. In terms of size, Honduras has a total area of 112,090 sq km which is slightly larger than Tennessee. It has 111,890 sq km land area and 200 sq km water area. Once part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and a half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982. During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting leftist guerrillas. The population of Honduras is approximately 7,639,327. The population density of it is 64/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.024%. Most of Honduras's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 90% of mestizo and 10% of Amerindian, black and white people. Honduras, the second poorest country in Central America and one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with an extraordinarily unequal distribution of income and massive unemployment, is banking on expanded trade under the US-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and on debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. Hondurasís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $25.63 billion with GDP of $3,300 per capita.
