About Honduras

Honduras is a democratic republic in Central America. It was formerly known as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting leftist guerrillas. The population of Honduras is approximately 7,639,327. The population density of it is 64/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.024%. Most of Honduras's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 90% of mestizo and 10% of Amerindian, black and white people. Honduras, the second poorest country in Central America and one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, with an extraordinarily unequal distribution of income and massive unemployment, is banking on expanded trade under the US-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and on debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. Hondurasís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $25.63 billion with GDP of $3,300 per capita.
