About Haiti

Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, is a Creole and French speaking Latin American country located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic, in the Greater Antilles archipelago. Ayiti (Land of Mountains) was the indigenous TaÌno or Amerindian name for the island. In terms of size, Haiti has a total area of 27,750 sq km which is slightly smaller than Maryland. It has 27,560 sq km land area and 190 sq km water area. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'Ouverture. After a prolonged struggle, Haiti became the first black republic to declare its independence in 1804. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti has been plagued by political violence for most of its history. The population of Haiti is approximately 8,924,553. The population density of it is 335/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 2.493%. Most of Haiti's people belong to Christian religion. Official and most common language of those people are French, Haitian Creole. It has 95% of black and 5% of mulatto and white people. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty. Two-thirds of all Haitians depend on the agricultural sector, mainly small-scale subsistence farming, and remain vulnerable to damage from frequent natural disasters, exacerbated by the country's widespread deforestation. Haitiís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $16.51 billion with GDP of $1,913 per capita.
