About Guyana

Guyana, officially named the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and previously known as British Guiana, is the only nation state of the Commonwealth of Nations on the mainland of South America. Bordered to the east by Suriname, to the south and southwest by Brazil and to the west by Venezuela, it is the third-smallest country on the mainland of South America.

In terms of size, Guyana has a total area of 214,970 sq km which is slightly smaller than Idaho. It has 196,850 sq km land area and 18,120 sq km water area.

Originally a Dutch colony in the 17th century, by 1815 Guyana had become a British possession. The abolition of slavery led to black settlement of urban areas and the importation of indentured servants from India to work the sugar plantations. This ethno cultural divide has persisted and has led to turbulent politics. Guyana achieved independence from the UK in 1966.

The population of Guyana is approximately 770,794. The population density of it is 3.5/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.211%. Most of Guyana's people belong to Christian religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. It has 50% of East Indian, 36% of black, 7% of Amerindian and 7% of white, Chinese, and mixed people.

The Guyanese economy exhibited moderate economic growth in 2001-07, based on expansion in the agricultural and mining sectors, a more favorable atmosphere for business initiatives, a more realistic exchange rate, fairly low inflation, and the continued support of international organizations. Guyanaís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $1.378 billion with GDP of $4,612 per capita.
