About Guam
Guam, officially the Territory of Guam, is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean and is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. It is one of five U.S. territories with an established civilian government. The island's capital is Hagatna (formerly Agana). Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands. In terms of size, Guam has a total area of 541.3 sq km which is three times the size of Washington, DC. Guam was ceded to the US by Spain in 1898. Captured by the Japanese in 1941, it was retaken by the US three years later. The military installation on the island is one of the most strategically important US bases in the Pacific. The population of Guam is approximately 175,877. The population density of it is 320/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.373%. Most of Guam's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people are English and Chamorro. It has 37% of Chamorro people and rest of them are Filipino, other Pacific islander, white and other Asian people. The economy depends largely on US military spending and tourism. Total US grants, wage payments, and procurement outlays amounted to $1.3 billion in 2004. Over the past 30 years, the tourist industry has grown to become the largest income source following national defense. The Guam economy continues to experience expansion in both its tourism and military sectors. Guamís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2000 estimate is approximately $3.2 billion with GDP of $21,000 per capita.
