About Grenada

Grenada is an island nation that includes the southern Grenadines in the southeastern Caribbean Sea. Grenada is located north of Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, and south of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The national bird of Grenada is the critically endangered Grenada Dove. In terms of size, Grenada has a total area of 344 sq km which is twice the size of Washington, DC. Carib Indians inhabited Grenada when COLUMBUS discovered the island in 1498, but it remained uncolonized for more than a century. The French settled Grenada in the 17th century, established sugar estates, and imported large numbers of African slaves. Britain took the island in 1762 and vigorously expanded sugar production. In 1967, Britain gave Grenada autonomy over its internal affairs. Full independence was attained in 1974, making Grenada one of the smallest independent countries in the Western Hemisphere. The population of Grenada is approximately 90,343. The population density of it is 259.5/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 0.406%. Most of Grenada's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. It has 82% of black people and 18% of mixed black and European, European and East Indian people. Grenada relies on tourism as its main source of foreign exchange, especially since the construction of an international airport in 1985. Strong performances in construction and manufacturing, together with the development of an offshore financial industry, have also contributed to growth in national output. Grenada's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2001 estimate is approximately $440 million with GDP of $5,000 per capita.
