About Ghana

The Republic of Ghana is a country in West Africa. It borders Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. The word 'Ghana' means 'Warrior King' and was the source of the name 'Guinea' (via French Guinoye) used to refer to the West African coast (as in Gulf of Guinea). In terms of size, Ghana has a total area of 239,460 sq km which is slightly smaller than Oregon. It has 230,940 sq km land area and 8,520 sq km water area. Formed from the merger of the British colony of the Gold Coast and the Togoland trust territory, Ghana in 1957 became the first sub-Saharan country in colonial Africa to gain its independence. Ghana endured a long series of coups before Lt. Jerry Rawlings took power in 1981 and banned political parties. The population of Ghana is approximately 23,382,848. The population density of it is 93/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.928%. Most of Ghana's people belong to Christian religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. It has Asante, Ewe, Fante, Boron, Dagomba, Dangme, Dagarte, Akyem, Ga and Akuapem people. Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has roughly twice the per capita output of the poorest countries in West Africa. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. Gold, cocoa production and individual remittances, is major sources of foreign exchange. Ghana's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $70 Billion with GDP of $3141 per capita.
