About the Gabon Republic
Gabon is a country in west central Africa sharing borders with Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo and the Gulf of Guinea. The capital and largest city is Libreville. Since its independence from France on August 17, 1960, the Republic has been ruled by four presidents. In the early 1990s, Gabon introduced a multi party system and a new democratic constitution that allowed for a more transparent electoral process and reformed many governmental institutions. In terms of size, Gabon has a total area of 267,667 sq km which is slightly smaller than Colorado. It has 257,667 sq km land area and 10,000 sq km water area. Only two autocratic presidents have ruled Gabon since independence from France in 1960. The current president of Gabon, El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba - one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world - has dominated the country's political scene for four decades. President Bongo introduced a nominal multiparty system and a new constitution in the early 1990s. The population of Gabon is approximately 1,485,832. The population density of it is 5.4/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.954%. Most of Gabon's people belong to Christian religion. Official and most common language of those people is French. It has Bantu tribes people. Gabon enjoys a per capita income four times that of most of sub-Saharan African nations. but because of high income inequality, a large proportion of the population remains poor. Gabon depended on timber and manganese until oil was discovered offshore in the early 1970s. The oil sector now accounts for 50% of GDP. Gabon's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2003 estimate is approximately $9.621 billion with GDP of $14,083 per capita.
