About East Timor
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is the official name of East Timor. It is located in the in Southeast Asia. It consists of the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecussi-Ambeno, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. In terms of size, it has 15,410 sq km of total area. The population of it is approximately 1,115,000. The population density of it is 64/sq km. 97% of East Timorese people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official languages of those people are Tetum and Portuguese. East Timor was colonized by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until Portugal's decolonization of the country. In late 1975 East Timor declared its independence but was invaded and occupied by Indonesia later that year, and declared that country's 27th province the following year. In 1999, following the United Nations-sponsored act of self-determination, Indonesia relinquished control of the territory and East Timor became the first new sovereign state of the twenty-first century on May 20, 2002. East Timor is one of only two predominantly Roman Catholic countries in Southeast Asia, the other being the Philippines. In term of economy, East Timor has a large and potentially lucrative coffee industry, which sells organic coffee to numerous Fair Trade retailers and on the open market. Its Purchasing power parity domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $2.608 billion with GDP of $2,500 per capita.
