About Djibouti
The Republic of Djibouti is the official name of Djibouti. It is located in the Eastern Africa, bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, between Eritrea and Somalia. In terms of size, it has 23,000 sq km of total area which is slightly smaller than Massachusetts. It has 22,980 sq km of land area and 20 sq km of water area. The population of it is approximately 506,221. The population density of it is 34/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.945%. 94% of Djiboutian people belong to Muslim religion. Official language of those people is French and Arabic. The French Territory of the Afars and the Issas became Djibouti in 1977. Hassan Gouled APTIDON installed an authoritarian one-party state and proceeded to serve as president until 1999. Unrest among the Afars minority during the 1990s led to a civil war that ended in 2001 following the conclusion of a peace accord between Afar rebels and the Issa-dominated government. In 1999, Djibouti's first multi-party presidential elections resulted in the election of Ismail Omar GUELLEH; he was re-elected to a second and final term in 2005. In term of economy, it is based on service activities connected with the country's strategic location and status as a free trade zone in the Horn of Africa. It has natural resources such as Minerals (salt, perlite, gypsum, limestone) and energy resources (geothermal and solar). Its Purchasing power parity domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $1.738 billion with GDP of $2,300 per capita.
