About Chile
Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in South America occupying a long and narrow coastal strip wedged between the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage at the country's southernmost tip. It is one of only two countries in South America that does not have a border with Brazil. In terms of size, Chile has a total area of 756,950 sq km which is slightly smaller than twice the size of Montana. It has 748,800 sq km land area and 8,150 sq km water area. Prior to the coming of the Spanish in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule while Araucanian Indians (also known as Mapuches) inhabited central and southern Chile. Although Chile declared its independence in 1810, decisive victory over the Spanish was not achieved until 1818. In the War of the Pacific (1879-83), Chile defeated Peru and Bolivia and won its present northern regions. It was not until the 1880s that the Araucanian Indians were completely subjugated. The population of Chile is approximately 16,454,143. The population density of it is 22/sq km. It has of population growth rate 0.905%. Most of Chile's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 95% of white and white-Amerindian people and rest are Amerindian. President Bachelet in 2006 established an Economic and Social Stabilization Fund to hold excess copper revenues so that social spending can be maintained during periods of copper shortfalls. This fund probably surpassed $20 billion at the end of 2007. Chile continues to attract foreign direct investment, but most foreign investment goes into gas, water, electricity and mining. Chile's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $231.061 billion with GDP of $13,936 per capita.
