About the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are a British overseas territory located in the western Caribbean Sea, comprising the islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. In terms of size, Cayman Island has a total area of 262 sq km which is 1.5 times the size of Washington, DC. The Cayman Islands were colonized from Jamaica by the British during the 18th and 19th centuries, and were administered by Jamaica after 1863. In 1959, the islands became a territory within the Federation of the West Indies, but when the Federation dissolved in 1962, the Cayman Islands chose to remain a British dependency. The population of Cayman Island is approximately 47,862. The population density of it is 139.5/sq km. It has of population growth rate 2.449%. Most of Cape Verde's people belong to United Church religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. It has 40% of mixed and rest are white and black people. With no direct taxation, the islands are a thriving offshore financial center. More than 68,000 companies were registered in the Cayman Islands as of 2003, including almost 500 banks, 800 insurers, and 5,000 mutual funds. A stock exchange was opened in 1997. Tourism is also a mainstay, accounting for about 70% of GDP and 75% of foreign currency earnings. Cayman Islands's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2004 estimate is approximately $1.939 billion with GDP of $43,800 per capita.
