About Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso, also known by its short-form name Burkina, is a landlocked nation in West Africa. It is surrounded by six countries: Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the south east, Togo and Ghana to the south, and CÙte d'Ivoire to the south west. Formerly called the Republic of Upper Volta, it was renamed on August 4, 1984, by President Thomas Sankara to mean the land of upright people in MorÈ and Dioula, the major native languages of the country. Current President Blaise COMPAORE came to power in a 1987 military coup and has won every election since then. Burkina Faso's high population density and limited natural resources result in poor economic prospects for the majority of its citizens. The population of Burkina Faso is approximately 15,264,735. The population density of it is 48/sq km. It has of population growth rate 3.109%. Most of Burkina Faso's people belong to Muslim religion. Official and most common language of those people is French. It has 40% of Mossi people and rest are Gurunsi, Senufo, Lobi, Bobo, Mande, and Fulani. One of the poorest countries in the world, landlocked Burkina Faso has few natural resources and a weak industrial base. About 90% of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture, which is vulnerable to periodic drought. Burkina Faso's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $16.845 billion with GDP of $1,284 per capita.
