About Botswana

Republic of Botswana is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa. Citizens of Botswana are Botswana regardless of ethnicity. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on 30 September 1966. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. In terms of size, Botswana has a total area of 600,370 sq km which is slightly smaller than Texas. It has 585,370 sq km land area and 15,000 sq km water area. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. The population of Botswana is approximately 1,842,323. The population density of it is 3/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.434%. Most of Botswana's people belong to Christian religion. The official and most common language of those people are English, Setswana . It has 79% of Tswana people and rest are Kalang, Basarwa, Kgalagadi and white people. In terms of economy, Botswana has maintained one of the world's highest economic growth rates since independence in 1966, though growth slowed to 4.7% annually in 2006-07. Two major investment services rank Botswana as the best credit risk in Africa. Diamond mining has fueled much of the expansion and currently accounts for more than one-third of GDP and for 70-80% of export earnings. Tourism, financial services, subsistence farming, and cattle raising are other key sectors. Botswana's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $25.676 billion with GDP of $16,450 per capita.
