About Bhutan

The Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked nation in South Asia. It is located amid the eastern end of the Himalaya Mountains and is bordered to the south, east and west by India and to the north by China. Bhutan is separated from Nepal by the Indian state of Sikkim. In terms of size, Bhutan has a total area of 47,000 sq km which is about one-half the size of Indiana. In 1865, Britain and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchulu, under which Bhutan would receive an annual subsidy in exchange for ceding some border land to British India. Under British influence, a monarchy was set up in 1907; three years later, a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs. The population of Bhutan is approximately 682,321. The population density of it is 45/sq km. It has of population growth rate 1.301%. Most of Bhutanís people belong to Lamaistic Buddhist religion. Official and most common language of those people is Dzongkha. It has 50% of Bhote people and rest are ethnic Nepalese, indigenous or migrant tribe. Though Bhutan's economy is one of the world's smallest, it has grown rapidly in recent years, by eight percent in 2005 and 14 percent in 2006. This was mainly due to the commissioning of the gigantic Tala Hydroelectricity project. Bhutanís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $4.39 billion with GDP of $5,477 per capita.
