About Benin
Benin, officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in Western Africa. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north; its short coastline to the south leads to the Bight of Benin. Its capital is Porto Novo, but the seat of government is Cotonou. Benin was known as Dahomey until 1975. In terms of size, Benin has a total area of 112,620 sq km. It has 110,620 sq km land area and 2,000 sq km water area. Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominent West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on 1 August 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military governments ended in 1972 with the rise to power of Mathieu Kerekou and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. The population of Benin is approximately 8,294,941. The population density of it is 75/sq km. It has of population growth rate 2.619%. Most of Belizeís people belong to Christian religion. Official and most common language of those people is French. It has 40% of Adja people and rest are Yoruba, Bariba, Ottamari, Yoa-Lokpa and Peulh. The economy of Benin remains underdeveloped and dependent on subsistence agriculture, cotton production, and regional trade. Growth in real output has averaged around 5% in the past seven years, but rapid population growth has offset much of this increase. Inflation has subsided over the past several years. Beninís gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $8.75 billion with GDP of $1,176 per capita.
