About Belize

Belize is a country in Central America and is the only Central American country where English is an official language. One part of the Mayan and Spanish empires, the Belizean territory was for more than a century a British colony known as British Honduras. It has 50% of Mestizo people and rest are Creole, Maya and Garifuna. In this small, essentially private-enterprise economy, tourism is the number one foreign exchange earner followed by exports of marine products, citrus, cane sugar, bananas, and garments. The government's expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, initiated in September 1998, led to sturdy GDP growth averaging nearly 4% in 1999-2007. Oil discoveries in 2006 bolstered the economic growth in 2006 and 2007. Belize's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2006 estimate is approximately $2.098 billion with GDP of $8,400 per capita.
