About Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is an island country in the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway (officially opened on November 25, 1986). Qatar is to the south across the Gulf of Bahrain. The planned Qatar Bahrain Friendship Bridge planned will link Bahrain to Qatar as the longest fixed link in the world. In terms of size, Bahrain has total 665 sq km area. It is 3.5 times the size of Washington, DC, USA. The population of Bahrain is approximately 1,046,814 as of 2007. The population density of it is 1454 per sq km. It has of population growth rate of 1.337%. Most of Bahrain's people are Islam and the rest follow Christianity. Languages spoken are Arabic, English, Farsi, Urdu. It has 62.4% of Bahraini people. From the 6th to 3rd century B.C. Bahrain was included in Persian Empire by Achaemenians, an Iranian dynasty. From the third century B.C. to arrival of Islam in the seventh A.D., Bahrain was controlled by two other Iranian dynasties of Parthians and Sassanids. By about 250 B.C., Parthian dynasty brought the Persian Gulf under their control and extended their influence as far as Oman. Because they needed to control the Persian Gulf trade route, the Parthians established garrisons in the southern coast of Persian Gulf. With its highly developed communication and transport facilities, Bahrain is home to numerous multinational firms with business in the Gulf. Petroleum production and refining account for over 60% of Bahrain's export receipts, over 70% of government revenues, and 11% of GDP (exclusive of allied industries), underpinning Bahrain's strong economic growth in recent years. Bahrain's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $19.75 billion with GDP of $23,604 per capita.
