About the Bahamas

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an independent sovereign, English-speaking country consisting of two thousand cays and seven hundred islands that form an archipelago. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida and the United States, north of Cuba, the island of Hispanola (Dominican Republic & Haiti) and the Caribbean, and northwest of the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands. In terms of size, Bahamas has total area of 13,940 sq km. It has 10,070 sq km land area and 3,870 sq km water area. The population of Bahamas is approximately 330,549 as of 2007. The population density of it is 23.27 per sq km. It has of population growth rate of 0.57%. Most of Bahamasís people belong to Baptist religion and rest also follow Anglican, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and many more religions. The official and most common language of those people is English. It has 85% of black people, 12% of white and 3% of Asian and Hispanic. The seafaring Taino people moved into the uninhabited southern Bahamas from Hispaniola and Cuba around the 7th century AD. These people came to be known as the Lucayans. There were an estimated 30,000+ Lucayans at the time of Columbus' arrival in 1492. Christopher Columbus's first landfall in the New World was on an island he named San Salvador (known to the Lucayans as Guanahahani) which is generally accepted to be present-day San Salvador Island (also known as Watling's Island) in the southeastern Bahamas. Here, Columbus made first contact with the Lucayans and exchanged goods with them. The Bahamas is one of the wealthiest Caribbean countries with an economy heavily dependent on tourism and offshore banking. Tourism together with tourism-driven construction and manufacturing accounts for approximately 60% of GDP and directly or indirectly employs half of the archipelago's labor force. Steady growth in tourism receipts and a boom in construction of new hotels, resorts, and residences had led to solid GDP growth in recent years. Bahamas' gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $6.524 billion with GDP of $17,843 per capita.
