About Australia

The Commonwealth of Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent, the major island of Tasmania, and numerous other islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast. Australia is the only country that is also a continent. In terms of size, Australia has a total area of 7,686,850 sq km. It has 7,617,930 sq km land area and 68,920 sq km water area. The first human habitation of Australia is estimated to have occurred between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago. These first Australians were possibly the ancestors of the current Indigenous Australians; they may have arrived via land bridges and short sea-crossings from present-day South-East Asia. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James Cook took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The population of Australia is approximately 20,600,856. The population density of it is 2.6/sq km. It has of population growth rate 0.801%. Most of Australiaís people belong to Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is English. It has 90% of white and rest of 10% are Asian and aboriginal. In terms of economy, Australia has a prosperous, Western-style mixed economy, with a per capita GDP slightly higher than that of the UK, Germany, and France in terms of purchasing power parity. The country was ranked third in the United Nations' 2007 Human Development Index and sixth in The Economist worldwide quality-of-life index 2005. The absence of an export-oriented manufacturing industry has been considered a key weakness of the Australian economy. Australia's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $718.4 billion with GDP of $34,359 per capita.
