About Aruba
Aruba is a 33-kilometre (21 mi)-long island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, 27 km (17 mi) north of the Paraguan Peninsula, Falcon State, Venezuela. A country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Aruba has no administrative subdivisions. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm sunny weather. In terms of size, Aruba has a total area of 193 sq km which is slightly larger than Washington, DC. Aruba's first inhabitants were the Coquetries Amerindians from the Arawak tribe, who migrated there from Venezuela to escape attacks by the Caribs. Fragments of the earliest known Indian settlements date back from 1,000 AD. The Coquetries remained more tied to South America than the Caribbean, due to Aruba's distance from other Caribbean islands and sea currents which made canoe travel to other islands difficult. The population of Aruba is approximately 101,541. The population density of it is 571/sq km. It has of population growth rate 1.501%. Most of Arubaís people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official and most common language of those people is Papiamento. It has 80% of mixed white/Caribbean Amerindian people. In terms of economy, the rapid growth of the tourism sector over the last decade has resulted in a substantial expansion of other activities. Over 1.5 million tourists per year visit Aruba, with 75% of those from the US. The island's economy has been dominated by five main industries: gold mining, phosphate mining, aloe export, petroleum, and tourism. Aruba's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $2.400 billion with GDP of $23,831 per capita.
