About Anguilla
Anguilla is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It consists of the main island of Anguilla itself, approximately 26 km (16 miles) long by 5 km (3 miles) wide at its widest point, together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. The island's capital is The Valley. It is located in Southern Africa, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, between Namibia and Democratic Republic of the Congo. In terms of size, Angola has a total area of 102 sq km which is about half the size of Washington, DC. Anguilla was first settled by Amerindian tribes who migrated from South America. The earliest Amerindian artefacts found on Anguilla have been dated to around 1300 BC, and remains of settlements date from 600 AD. The date of European discovery is uncertain: some sources claim that Columbus sighted the island in 1493, while others state that the island was first discovered by the French in 1564 or 1565. The population of Anguilla is approximately 14,108. The population density of it is 132/sq km. It has of population growth rate 2.332%. 47% of Angolaís people belong to indigenous beliefs religion and rest are from Roman Catholic and Protestant. Official and most common language of those people is Portuguese. It has 90% of black people and rest of 10% are mixed, mulatto, white. In term of economy, Anguilla has few natural resources, and the economy depends heavily on luxury tourism, offshore banking, lobster fishing, and remittances from emigrants. Increased activity in the tourism industry has spurred the growth of the construction sector, contributing to economic growth. Anguilla's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $108.9 million with GDP of $8,800 per capita.
