About Sky Broadband
Sky Broadband is the ISP service of BSkyB provided solely to customers of Sky's satellite TV service. Internet access is offered free to all of Sky's customers, over 1 million households in total. They were voted overall winner in the Broadbandchoices.co.uk customer satisfaction survey in July 2008. Although some new customers have in the past experienced delays in subscribing to the service and their migration to using Google Apps for email was hampered by a lack of support, Sky Broadband is still considered one of the best value for money ADSL services in the UK.The primary plans are Sky Broadband Base, the free service with a 2MB maximum download speed 2GB usage allowance, Sky Broadband Mid, the £5/month service with an 8MB maximum download speed and 40GB usage allowance and Sky Broadband Max, the £10/month service with a 16MB maximum download speed and no usage cap. In fact, as of November 2008 Sky were the only ISP in the UK to offer truly unlimited internet usage without additional charges. All of these services depend on the local exchange being Easynet enabled, otherwise alternative services are available using the slower BT Wholesale network.
In November 2008 Sky announced that they would be increasing the price of their broadband internet packages by £5 per month for all customers not connected to Sky Talk, their free home telephone service. However, as of December 2008 this information had not been distributed to existing customers so it is yet to be seen how this will affect them.
All new customers receive a wireless router and McAfee Internet Security Suite and 12 months of McAfee VirusScan for Mac users. However, Sky do impose a broadband set-up fee of £30 for new Sky customers and £60 for existing Sky customers.
