Messaging with the Samsung Genio Qwerty
The Samsung Genio Qwerty messaging functionality is the main attraction in a phone that is aimed squarely at a younger audience. Although other messaging phones, including the Genio Pro, are designed around a landscape QWERTY keypad housed beneath the screen by a sliding mechanism, the Samsung Genio Qwerty opts for a portrait layout that makes it look very similar to the BlackBerry business phones. That is not to say that the messaging focus makes the Genio Qwerty overly austere; this is still a phone for the kids rather than a smartphone for entrepreneurs. This fact is reflected in the design of the Genio’s interface as well as its light weight.
The keypad itself is really rather small. That is not to suggest that it will be hard to use once you are used to the layout and the size of the keys, but it is likely that those with larger thumbs over the age of 18 may find the Samsung Genio Qwerty a little frustrating to use. However, since this is a phone that understands the requirements of its target audience intimately, it is no surprise that those with petite thumb prints will be able to get the most out of this phone.
The Genio Qwerty will shine most brightly when it is used for sending text messages. Billions of texts are sent each day and the UK has the most prolific texting population in the world. As such, the benefit of the Samsung Genio Qwerty messaging keyboard will be felt every time you use your phone. The Genio Qwerty also does its best to make text conversations look alive thanks to a colourfully designed interface. Each message you receive from a contact will be displayed in a little speech bubble and despite the undeniable age of SMS texting, the Genio Qwerty is able to put a fresh spin on an old classic. If you are rarely caught making voice calls for fear of irritating those around you, but love to text your mates about every little thing, then a dedicated messaging phone such as the Genio Qwerty is an excellent choice.
The Samsung Genio Qwerty messaging keypad is not limited to typing texts. It can also be used to type emails if you set up the phone to connect to an existing account. There is also a built in Facebook application which will allow you to access the mobile version of the site. You can then use the keypad to type status updates, write on your mates’ walls and ridicule the latest embarrassing photographs as they are uploaded. MySpace connectivity is also made possible on the Genio Qwerty, although there is less use for the keypad on this ever more music-focused social networking site.
Sending messages, receiving emails and getting online is all made possible thanks to the 2.5G EDGE network connection. Although this is not quite as high speed as 3G, it means that you will be able to spend longer away from a mains socket with each charge. Most people have a group of friends with whom they frequently swap messages and with the Genio Qwerty you can organise your most frequent contacts into a Buddy List. This will allow every message, email and phone call you receive from your best mates to be privileged above others and you can view conversations with individuals quickly and easily.
The Samsung Genio Qwerty messaging capabilities extend into instant messaging and there is a program called Multi IM that allows you consolidate your existing IM accounts into a single interface and also to host conference chats with several of your friends wherever you are.
