Sony Ericsson Naite Preview

The Sony Ericsson Naite is a new release which will sell itself on its eco-friendly construction and greener operating credentials. This is not the first phone to boast about how pro-environment it is and it certainly will not be the last. If you are a mobile user with a conscience, is the Sony Ericsson Naite the handset for you?

The Naite dispenses with external frills and has a no-nonsense, almost old school bar design. There are no touch screens or fancy sliding mechanisms here, just a phone that looks ready to be a workhorse suited to the daily grind. The 2.2 inch screen is bright and the navigation keys and numerical keypad are all laid out as a regular phone user would expect. The silver detailing on the pad and around the edges is nice, but the Naite will not be winning any awards for design innovation.

What will make the Sony Ericsson Naite attractive to a certain demographic is its membership of the Greenheart environmental range of mobile handsets. That means that the Naite is produced using fewer harmful toxins that other mobiles. It also is made from recycled materials and the packaging has been reduced to cut down on the carbon footprint of the phone as it is transported to your door.

The phone itself also has an Energy Star energy efficiency stamp of approval. This is because the Naite has a built-in light sensor which automatically adjusts the backlight to suit the level of light in the outside environment. This means it will use less electricity, give you longer battery life and have less of an impact on the environment over the course of its lifetime. There is even a calculator application that will let you work out just how much CO2 you are using, which is complimented by the low-power charger. Overall there has been an admirable amount of work put in to making this phone more efficient and environmentally friendly and for that it is hard to criticise the Sony Ericsson Naite.

The Naite is no light-weight when it comes to features. It is a 3.5G phone, which means you can download and upload files at high speeds wirelessly and also browse the internet without too much delay. It also features a splendid built in GPS function, but it would have been nice to have Wi-Fi connectivity as well in order to really make this a serious business contender.

The Naite is compatible with Microsoft Exchange, expanding its business usability even further and for those more interested in the fun side of mobile use it has some pretty decent multimedia functions. You can put music on a micro SD card and the Naite will be able to chew through it happily enough. There is also a 2 megapixel camera on the rear of the device, although there is no flash so do not expect the best quality photographs in the world. You can also record and playback video, but the low resolution restricts its suitability primarily to YouTube.

The Naite may be green, but it is not just a basic handset. When you consider all of its functions it looks as though it could find a home in the business market, amongst companies and corporations who want to reduce their carbon emissions. The Sony Ericsson Naite is available in the UK on the O2 network. O2 is also currently giving Naite buyers access to several free gifts with environmentally-friendly implications, which is a nice addition to an already ethical handset.
